Tektronix Phaser 850 Fix

Tektronix Phaser 850 Fix: I’ve got a consistent “Media Jam” error on my Tektronix Phaser 850 DX. The paper picks up and feeds just fine, but stops right at the edge of the “Rapid Release” bar for no obvious reason. The error codes 1-10 are all the same, reading 31,003.42:88, and 11-15 are all the same, reading 22,722:06:5458. The printer has only 5458 pages through it, and was working fine until this started up.

I thought the problem might be at the “Rapid Release” bar, and if it wasn’t then, it is now, because the locking tabs on the part were really brittle and broke off when I tried to remove it. Oops.

The printer has been asking for a maintenance kit, which I was going to buy anyway, but is the “Rapid Release” bar included in the kit or do I have to find a replacement elsewhere?

Any other suggestions as to where or what to look for would be appreciated.

This Phaser 850 has had intermittant problems with paper jams at the media tray and exit rollers from the begining. The main two problems I have seen are; A. incomplete paper pickup jams in the High Capacity media tray (paper is dislodged from the stack but never got picked up), and B. paper not fully exiting the top of the printer (paper exits 3/4 of page length then is retrieved about an inch. The paper has cleared the Rapid release guide blade assy. & has no wrinkles or creases). There are no obvious impediments to the paper path.

Regarding item A
I have replaced the paper pick roller 116-0272-00, (double roller with drive gear in the middle of rollers). When a pick jam occurs, I notice the “backstop” for the H.C. media tray is dislodged. I have also replaced the Paper Pick roller 401-0813-01

Regarding item B
I’m getting error 22.700.02 & 22.703.05 error messages.
The Transfix exit sensor flag appears to operate properly, (spring is attached seems to have appropriate tension).
The pulley exit drive gear & belt tension on left side of printer seems to be okay as well as the electric clutch cap/wipe/purge drive on right side of printer.

1. On the Phaser 850, how does one check sensor status? I have a service manual, but the procedure is not clear.
2. The Y-Axis belt tension adjustment appears to require special tools, (torque wrench). Has anyone performed this adjustment?
3. The fault codes & actions indicate possible Y-Axis encoder issues, DM Clutch or poor quality media.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve gotten paper jams similar to what you describe on our Phaser 850.

As of late, we’ve been getting jams in between the exit cover and the front cover. We’re printing on card stock and doing a two-sided print. It jams when it brings the paper back in and goes to print on the second side.

_Just_ replaced the maintenance drawer and that doesn’t seem to fix the problem.

For now I’m printing one side and running them back thru to print the other.

The paper pick clutch (p/n 401080802)for the upper tray has been know to slip. This will cause it to pull paper at the say time as the lower tray and will cause the jams and message you mentioned. I would suggest replacing it and the dmc clutch (p/n650428800) as well at the same time. I doubt the y-axis pulley is a problem but I would disregard it either. To adjust it you need a y-axis pulley adjust tool, you can use a torque wrench but not necessarily needed.
Regarding the duplex jams using cardstock, It will jam every time. It is a limitation of the printer. It is not designed to auto duplex cardstock, this must be done manually through the bypass feed tray. I have seen limited success auto duplex card stock but not with anything heavier than 60lb.

Thanks for the feedback! I wasn’t looking forward to messing with the Y-Axis adjustment. I’ll replace the paper pick clutch (p/n 401080802)and the dmc clutch (p/n650428800) and report my results.

To check sensor states you need to run pc based diags. There is a special diags cable and software. I have seen on this site where people have tried to make their own cable, not sure of the success. The software may be available to purchase from xerox or other vendors. The diags are dos based and work very well. The cable plugs into the back of printer into a 5 pin flat connector just beyond the metal rear shield of the main board.

Thanks Marty5261. I’m not having much success confirming the part number you gave me for the dmc clutch (p/n650-4288-00).
Is this the same as Electric Clutch, Drum Maintenance p/n 401-0855-00?

I have a 850dp printer and have the exact same trouble in the top exit door. Replaced the exit clutch and belt tension looks fine. I have changed media several times, and still no change in the jamming. Everything that I have looked at looks good. I can select a option off my printer screen such as printer info, or print off my Diagnosing print – Quality problems page and they seem to print pretty well very little jams. I went and down loaded a new updated driver version, also no help. I’m confused on what to do next. Any ideas?

I have exit paper jams on my 850DP. I tried clutches and rollers and doors but the problem remains with standard resolution. With extended resolution it prints fine. Anybody knows why?

Have you actually replaced the clutches? Phantom jamming with mixed results based on changing the resolution is usually a sign of a bad drum maintenance clutch, but it could also be software.

Have you check the solenoid on the upper right side. The arm on the solenoid latches on to a white cam. There’s a black pad on the solenoid that gets gummy and sticky, this causes the arm to not release quick enough to latch on to the cam. put a thin piece of tape over the pad will solve your jamming problem.
